Operational Guide on Agroecology

A practical framework and operational tools to support agroecological transitions in international cooperation.

About this publication

The Operational Guide on Agroecology provides a practical roadmap for translating agroecological principles into concrete action.

Developed by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for International Partnerships, the guide responds to the growing interest in agroecology within the European Union (EU) and in partner countries.

Its main objective is to equip users, first and foremost EU Delegation staff, with both a solid theoretical framework (Part 1) and methodological tools (Part 2) that support a better understanding of the concept and its practical implementation.

By combining conceptual guidance, operational instruments, and field-based case studies, the publication helps policymakers, practitioners, and development partners design and implement agroecological transitions that contribute to resilient, inclusive, and sustainable food systems worldwide.

About FO-RI
FO-RI (Farmers’ Organisations leading Research and Innovation), a programme by the EU, implemented by AgriCord, supports farmer-led research and innovation processes that place farmers’ organisations at the centre of knowledge generation, experimentation, and scaling of agroecological practices.

By strengthening collaboration between farmers, researchers, and development actors, FO-RI initiatives help ensure that agroecological solutions are locally adapted, inclusive, and sustainable.

Find FO-RI stories in the guide on the following pages:

  • p. 68 – Agroecological solutions protecting banana farms in Mindanao (Philippines) from Tropical Race 4 disease

  • p. 116 – Inclusive action-research supporting the agroecological transition of market gardening systems in Madagascar (RAITRA project)

  • p. 129 – Strengthening breadfruit value chains in Tonga as a model for agroecological development
