Panel Discussion
Fact or Fiction? Debunking Myths in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems

Description

In the race to make food systems more sustainable, it’s easy for facts, opinions, and hype to blur together. Promises of “climate-smart,” “nature-positive,” or “zero-emission” agriculture often capture headlines—but how do we tell innovation from illusion?

This interactive session blends myth-busting with future-thinking. Participants will test their knowledge on some of the biggest claims in food and climate—spanning livestock, soil health, fertilizer, and adaptation—and challenge both outdated assumptions and overblown promises. The goal is to build a sharper understanding of where real progress is being made, what trade-offs remain, and what “future breakthroughs” deserve cautious optimism.

Objectives

  • To separate evidence from hype by examining both persistent myths and emerging “blue-sky” technologies in sustainable agriculture.
  • To engage participants in an open, honest reflection on what works, what doesn’t, and what might—grounded in science and farmer realities.
  • To highlight the role of adaptation alongside mitigation, with attention to soil, water, livestock, and livelihoods.

Expected outcomes

  • Participants gain clearer understanding of key scientific and practical truths underpinning sustainable agriculture.
  • Inspiration for researchers and policymakers to focus on scalable, verifiable solutions that combine mitigation, adaptation, and resilience.
  • Messages from the session can feed into broader CSA Conference communications on “evidence-based transformation.”
