In an article published by the Coalition of Action for Soil Health, Dickens Ateku Alubaka, Senior Manager, Soil and Land Health Laboratories Research Services at CIFOR-ICRAF’s Landscape Alliance, shares insights from a field visit to the Maasai Kajiado Women Dairy Cooperative Society Ltd. during the 2026 AgriCord Annual Event Week in Kenya.
The visit highlighted how more than 3,400 women farmers have organized themselves to strengthen dairy production, improve market access, and increase household incomes through collective action and effective cooperative governance. The cooperative, which is supported by We Effect, AgriCord's Swedish Agri-Agency, has built a resilient dairy value chain integrating quality control systems, milk aggregation, processing, and digital payment solutions that enhance transparency and financial inclusion.
Operating in a challenging semi-arid environment, the cooperative demonstrates the power of women-led farmer organizations to drive innovation, resilience, and sustainable rural development. The experience also underscored the importance of collaboration among farmer organizations, research institutions, development partners, and local authorities in building more inclusive and resilient food systems.
