First Access to Seeds Index for South and Southeast Asia now available
The Access to Seeds Index for South and Southeast Asia explores the performance of the seed industry and which seed company, of the 24 evaluated, takes the lead in supporting smallholder farmer productivity. The Index is initiated by the Access to Seeds Foundation and supported by AgriCord, as well as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Government of the Netherlands.
The Index found that leading seed companies have seed sales activities in all countries across South and Southeast Asia; however, seed production and breeding investments tend to be concentrated in a select number of countries, notably India and Thailand. Thailand-based East-West Seed achieved the top ranking. It has built a succesful business model around smallholders (98% of its client base) including breeding for their specific needs, selling seeds in small packages and providing training.
