AgriCord greets the Resolution on the Decade of Family Farming (2019-2028), which was adopted by the United Nations' General Assembly of December 2017
. The goal is to promote better public policies
on family farming, an objective that is fully supported by AgriCord.
Family farming is not a new theme within the UN framework. In 2014 the International Year of Family Farming already became a success. But the key role of family farmers has become even more apparent these past few years. Family farmers produce 80% of the world's food in terms of value, but still 80% of the extremely poor live in rural agrarian areas.
Long term action is crucial, and the new Resolution aims to "promote projects and policies on Family Farming recognizing the role that family farms play in improving nutrition and ensuring global food security, eradicating poverty, ending hunger, conserving biodiversity, achieving environmental sustainability and helping to adress migration".
The case for Family Farmers
AgriCord is mandated by farmers organisations' and specialised in tailor made support to the FO's and cooperatives. AgriCord is a global alliance of agencies that are operational in supporting farmers' organisations' capacity development. This provides opportunities for FO to FO exchange.
AgriCord believes that family farmers should be linked to policy makers and the private sector, and this is best done by farmers' organisations. Therefore, AgriCord and its Farmers Fighting Poverty support farmers organisations' in all their functions in long term partnerships.
