Meeting rural transformation

On 14 September took place the CTA Brussels Development Briefing on the “Major drivers for rural transformation in Africa”.
The Briefing discussed the main challenges involved in rural transformation processes by sharing different perspectives on rural transformation processes across continents. It also focused on rural employment and rural labour markets needed to create growth and economic development. It has been coroganised with NEPAD. In the first panel challenges and opportunities in rural transformation have been discussed by several speakers, experts in rural transformation, and with examples in Ethiopia and Brasil. The second panel focussed on the creation of rural employment for economic growth in ACP countries with presentations of ILO and FAO experts and examples of Malawi and Rwanda.
Among the speakers were the CEO of NEPAD, Dr. Ibrahim Assane Mayaki, Prof. Peter Hazell from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, and from farmers organisations: Elisabeth Atangana, President of PROPAC and President of Pan African Farmers Forum (PAFFO), Elisangela dos Santos Araujo, Coordination Federation of family Smallholders in Brasil (FETRAF), and Dr. Dyborn Chibonga, Chief executive officer of NASFAM, Malawi.
