work area 14: Gender and Women in Development

We have earmarked a considerable sum for specific projects and activities aimed at women and at improving the gender balance in organizations and their activities. So far, the experience has been that conducting a prior assessment of all project applications and making targeted recommendations to organizations on these matters does help, but does not suffice. Consequently, we have separated this subject out, earmarked funds for it, and given the order to bring attention to women to the level desired by us. We focus on general rural people’s organizations to increase women’s participation. Strictly speaking, only the reach of project in this work area alone will already increase women's participation by almost 10%. However, we expect that the eventual effect will be greater and that women’s participation will certainly increase to over 30% in 2010, which means reaching 820.634 women in Farmers Fighting Poverty. Via activities in this work area, we will therefore also make targeted supplementary investments in projects in each of the other work areas to make womens participation farmers fighting poverty more likely to occur. Target for 2007: involving 81.280 women in all projects with an outreach of 36.798 in this specific area. Gender contact UPA-DI : Tamari Langlais Gender contact SCC: Malin Wallin
