08csf-5092 Business and organisational support to consolidate trading relations between Latin-American and European cooperatives
CSF’s area of work is Latin America in order to expand the number of its members and so to ensure an offer with a large variety of products to the market. It also aims to expand in order to strengthen its network and thus its members and their capacities and business. One of the objective of CSF is to contribute in developing, increasing, strengthening and in integrating organic and fairtrade farmers organizations based on the democratic principles of cooperativism. Through CSF actual members in the South are trading coffee, honey, bananas, sugar, cocoa, nuts, and sesame seeds among others. There are also Italian members from “Libera Terra”, organizations that have been beneficiaries of expropriated land from the Italian mafia. Together with the member CONAPI, an Italian trading company, a fair trade relationship with members in the South has been developed in order to enter the Italian supermarket chain COOP. To conclude, we can describe one of CSF’s profile as a strategic alliance South-North between organizations that trade organic and fair-trade products. CSF gives 3 services to its members: 1- Business facilitation: CSF looks for national and international niche markets for the products of its members. It looks for strategic alliances in the selling countries with organizations and companies that support CSF principles and that support the process of adding value of raw material in the producing countries. 2- Technical projects: CSF coordinates technical projects that are designed with the goal of increasing the process of the raw material in country of production, in increasing efficiency of the production and the quality of the products and in strengthening the capacities skills of its producers’ members. When needed, CSF looks for the financing of projects to respond to the need of its members. 3- Trainings CSF facilitates trainings to its members related to topics like development of the products, business management, social entrepreneurship and market management. CSF facilitates short courses and technical exchanges between organizations, among others. During 2007, CSF facilitates trade of the products of its members to niche markets. In this context, sales of the products from producers’ members have been done in Italy through CSF’s Italian member and importer CONAPI. Producers’ members have sold 1.2 million Euros of products on the Italian market. There has been 35% increase in sales in Italy during the first semester of this year. In this period, more than 680.000 products have been sold. These products are mainly being sold in the supermarket chain COOP and other specialized shops. The project objective is to strengthen the capacities of organizational management, entrepreneurship, and trade management of producers’ organizations that produce organic and fairtrade products in Latin America in order to improve sales and positioning of their products on niche markets in Europe and in Latin America. The expected results are: - product and niche market development, - organizational and business management of actual and new members, - local market management, - institutional, administration and salary strengthening of CSF structure Currently, CSF is financially supported by the Dutch development agency HIVOS, the foundation AVINA, VECO (Belgium) and possibly ECOMERCADO. On top of this it counts with 2 development workers financed by the German agency EED. The financial support of the agencies is complementary between each other. Regarding the monitoring and evaluation of the project, the coordination team of CSF will elaborate indicators for the project. The CSF’s board and its general assemble are in charge of monitoring and evaluation of the project. As far as sustainability of the project is concerned, it is to mentioned that first of all, products sales of members are made on niche markets which are paying a premium for the characteristics of the product (organic and fair-trade) so that it ensures a fair income. On top of this, it is about alliances between importers in the North (so far with CONAPI in Italy) and producers in the South so that the relationship between producers and buyers is a long term relationship. Regarding the financing of CSF’s coordination, CSF should be close to be self sustainable in the next years as it is planned to get 0,01 Euro per members’ product sold by the importers in order to finance CSF services.
