03ma-2561 Services to Vanilla Producers for Export
Vanilla is offering an alternative for coffee as cash crop in East African countries such as Tanzania. International marketing opportunities exist, but need to be used. Mayawa (the organisation of vanilla farmers in Bukoba) have the advantage that their organisation also has the knowledge and infrastructure to cure the fresh beans and to produce high quality cured vanilla. The production process (from the green beans to the cured vanilla) needs to be improved on different levels. Therefore, a contract farming model will be worked out to spell out the duties of both parties (Mayawa and its farmers). Part of the contract is delivery of services by Mayawa to its farmers. For the establishment and/or improvement of those services, this project foresees a budget for a marketing study, improvement of extension services, improvement of input supply, establishment of a purchasing circuit, establishment of a market info system to the farmers (by means of a newsletter), design of a website and the hiring and training of a marketing manager.
