The Confederation of Farmers of Portugal (CAP) was founded on November 24, 1975, born of a spontaneous movement by Portuguese farmers. Today, CAP is emerging as social and professional agricultural organisation and brings together more than 300 organisations around the country, which translate into federations, Wineries, Regional Associations, corresponding to the main agricultural areas of Portugal, by associations specialized technical sector and Cooperatives. CAP defends the interests of Portuguese agriculture in the country and abroad, always safeguarding the economic component of the activity are the aims of CAP in the defense of a dignified and quality life for all farmers who wish to continue their activity.

At the international level CAP is represented in different Committees: COPA, USSE (Forest Owners' Union of Southern Europe), the CEPF (Confederation of European Forest Owners), the EESC (European Economic and Social Committee) and the European Commission through its Advisory Groups. 

Of the various specialized technical services to farmers provided by CAP stands out training through three Agricultural Training Centres, and direct aid to farms through a national network of fifteen Rural Information Centres. The headquarters of CAP is in Lisbon, and has affiliated regional and specialized as the Rural Information Centres, both in the continent and the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores.
